Inside the Clinical Decision-Making Process
Get clearer on what to assess, what to prioritize, and what to do next in complex eating and digestive disorder cases.
When eating and digestive disorder symptoms overlap, knowing what to do next isn’t always straightforward.
Your client may have ongoing GI symptoms, an eating disorder history, food restriction, previous testing and recommendations from multiple providers.
There may be several possible explanations for what’s happening.
- What should you be looking for?
- What questions do you still need to ask?
- What needs your attention first?
Join eating disorder and digestive disorder specialists Marci Evans and Lauren Adler Dear for an interactive, case-based workshop focused on the clinical decisions that arise when eating and digestive disorders overlap.
Through two real-world cases, you’ll see how they move from the initial client presentation through assessment, treatment priorities and outcomes, including the questions they ask and the factors that influence what they do next.
October 15, 2026 | 12:00-1:30 PM ET
90 Minutes | 1.5 CPEU* | Recording Included | $47s
*This workshop is pending approval for 1.5 CPEUs for Dietitians in accordance with the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s CPEU Prior Approval Program.
When the client doesn't fit neatly into a protocol
Knowing the clinical information is one thing.
Knowing what to do with it when several things may be happening at once can be much harder.
You might find yourself wondering:
- Are these symptoms related to the eating disorder, a digestive disorder, something else, or several things at once?
- Do I have enough information to make this recommendation?
- Could the GI intervention I’m considering reinforce eating disorder behaviours?
- What needs to happen first?
- When should I investigate further, collaborate with another provider or refer?
These are the kinds of questions Marci and Lauren
will explore with you on October 15.
Two Complex Cases. From Presentation to Outcome
Rather than simply telling you what they would recommend, Marci and Lauren will take you through two real-world cases one piece at a time.
You’ll see:
- What information catches their attention
- What additional questions they ask
- What information they still need
- How they determine what matters most
- Which interventions they consider and why
- Potential pitfalls they’re watching for
- When they might take a different path than intended
- What happened with the client and what the case taught them
You’ll also see where their approaches overlap and where their different clinical lenses lead them to notice or consider different things.

Learning Objectives
After participating in this workshop, you will be able to:
- Observe how experienced clinicians approach clinical decision-making when faced with complex and uncertain presentations.
- Describe factors that influence clinical decision-making in complex eating disorder and digestive disorder cases.
- Recognize common clinical reasoning challenges that arise when digestive and eating disorder symptoms overlap.
- Identify opportunities for further assessment, collaboration or referral when evaluating complex eating disorder and digestive disorder cases.
Get Clearer on What to Assess, What to Prioritize and What to Do Next
Marci and Lauren will introduce a practical process you can bring back to your own complex cases:
- What do we know?
- What don’t we know?
- What matters most right now?
- What are the potential risks and benefits?
- Where do you and the client agree?
Because symptoms may be multifactorial.
The “best” intervention on paper may not be something the client is currently able or willing to do.
And sometimes the best next step is getting more information before making another recommendation.
