Marci will begin her presentation with a series of questions, inviting participants to reflect on their own relationship to the concept of body image and how their experience has been impacted by their dietetics education and training.
Marci will then share research, which explores the particular pressures dietetic students and RDNs face in relationship to body image. This research includes an open invitation to our profession to consider addressing these challenges during our dietetic training.
Marci will then explore how providing opportunities for self-exploration expands and improves our skill-set as clinicians and is the foundation for increasing competence for providing body image counseling with their clients. Marci will review current research in neurobiology and positive psychology to explore the concepts of body image and body image counseling.
She will then review common obstacles RDNs face when it comes to body image work and provide introductory concepts of body image assessment and intervention that the RDN can use with clients.
Empowering Your Clients, Empowering Yourself: Embracing Counseling Strategies for Meaningful Behavior Change
South East Massachusetts Dietetic Association

As dietitians, we know how important it is to use effective counseling techniques to promote behavior change. Yet, we often feel ill-equipped to do so due to a lack of training or even fears about scope of practice.
In this highly interactive workshop, Marci will utilize a series of case studies to illustrate how dietitians can integrate an array of counseling tools to enhance your work as dietitians. Marci will provide ample time for questions and dialogue and will invite attendees to share clinical stuck points and offer feedback to work through challenges.
By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:
- Describe the difference between providing therapy vs. working therapeutically as an RDN.
- Identify 3 different types of therapies use for behavior change work: Dialetical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Internal Family Systems (IFS).
- Cite 3 different counseling tools dietitians can use to support behavior change in their clients.
I look forward to seeing you!
